Maui craftsman Tom Calhoun is noted for his fusion of Art Nouveau elegance with the simplicity of the Zen aesthetic into what he calls “Pacific Nouveau.” Tom is inspired by the churning tides of the Pacific, the majestic Hawaiian mountain ridges, and all the inherent beauty in Hawaii. Tom starts by personally milling sustainable Hawaii trees. Then, the design element begins. Tom produces pages of sketches to refine an initial inspiration.

Calhoun’s work has appeared in the juried exhibits of Art Maui, as well as the Young Presidents Organization art show and Lama Ho’iki’s Ho’okahua exhibit. His work has been recognized with six top awards in seven years of entries in the “Woods of Hawaii” show.

Modeled after a Mamane tree growing in the Auwahi district on Ulupalakua Ranch land. Named for a saying in Mary Pukui's "Olelo No'eau".

" He Mamane i uka" - Likening a great chief to a tall Mamane tree growing above all others in the uplands.
