American sculptor and woodworker Steven Beck creates a series of bronze sculptures with wood surfboards.  From his home in Waikoloa on the Big Island, Steven has crafted exquisite sculptures featuring different eras in the evolution of the sport starting with early Hawaii. Earlier in his career, Steven worked at Industrial Light & Magic in Los Angeles.  There, he was surrounded by the most talent model sculptors, which led him to pursue his own passion for sculpting.

In ancient Hawaii, the alaia was the islands’ most commonly used surfboard. Unlike its larger, more regal cousin, the olo (and typically half its size, which could be twenty feet or longer), the alaia was crafted to be svelte and thin so you could feel the wave vibrate beneath you as you skimmed over its surface. Crafted from Koa wood, it was enjoyed by monarchs and masses alike. But given it was finless, the alaia was also hard to control. Which meant you had to be careful riding it, that, or you had to be utterly courageous given Hawaii’s huge surf. Regardless, whether ridden prone, kneeling, sitting, or the hardest to do – standing, if someone with skills offered you instruction – especially if it contained the royal perspective – you listened.
