Bronze Sculpture "South Shore Sting #2" by Steven Beck
American sculptor and woodworker Steven Beck creates a series of bronze sculptures with wood surfboards. From his home in Waikoloa on the Big Island, Steven has crafted exquisite sculptures featuring different eras in the evolution of the sport starting with early Hawaii. Earlier in his career, Steven worked at Industrial Light & Magic in Los Angeles. There, he was surrounded by the most talented model sculptors, which led him to pursue his own passion for sculpting.
It is the mid-1970s. Ala Moana, the preeminent break along the southern beaches of Oahu, has become the testing ground for the latest thing coming from Hawaii’s hottest shapers. It is the Sting, later to be renamed the Stinger. A hybrid design combining a big wave gun tail section with the wide, sexy hips of a hotdog board made for smaller surf, this combination has it all. Fast, light, and with its forward focused single fin making it hyper-maneuverable, with the era’s best pilots ripping “town” all summer long, the South Shore Sting becomes a lethal sight.
