Glass artist Caleb Nichols is inspired by the moods and vastness of the ocean and the skies above. The Stoughton, MA artist pushes his concepts further with every new piece. Caleb explains "The wilder and more colorful I make my sculptures, the more they invoke an inner calm. A funny kind of inverse effect."

Caleb has discovered is own eloquent aesthetic. "It's taken me years to make something simple and not have the urge to gussy it up." Influenced by Japanese art, Nichols created his own technique after mastering glass blowing, casting, annealing and fusing. "I create glass forms using these traditional techniques. Then hit it with a hammer." The result, is brand new art form – “smashed glass.”

“Smashing” leaves Caleb with chunks of glass that become fog, froth, foam, waves, beach stones and boulders in his fused works. Caleb’s unique glass technique gives his work distinctively rough dynamics. Interestingly, the medium brought him to the subject.

Caleb finds inspiration in his childhood fascination with Penobscot Bay in Maine. He seeks out Winslow Homers in museums. Caleb loves to sail and spends hours contemplating the ocean. At Tulane University, Caleb discovered glass and got hooked with its parallels with water on the jagged coast of his New England roots. "I take the traditional idea of a seascape," he explains, "and bring it into contemporary glass."
