Retired US Air Force officer Don Albrecht and his wife Pat have lived in Mountain View on the Big Island for over 30 years. He has been turning since 1989. Don personally harvests the wood he uses to make Koa umeke and calabash bowls. After rough-turning a Koa vessel to about an inch thick, Don dries the wood for several months. Then, he remounts the wood on his lathe for a second round of shaping and sanding. Finally, each piece is buffed and polished to create a beautiful, one-of-a-kind vessel.
