Hopoe was a-hula dancer of Kea'au, Puna in a time when gods mingled with men.

Because of her dancing and kindly nature, Hopoe was taken as a favorite friend by the goddess Hi'iaka - the youngest sister of Pele. Hopoe taught Hi'iaka the dance of hula and together they would make leis of lehua blossoms.  When Pele sent Hi'iaka to Kaua'i to fetch Lohi'au, Pele's dream lover, the first request Hi'iaka made to Pele was to be kind to Hopoe and keep her ohi'a grove safe.
After a time, when Hi'iaka did not return as expected, Pele in a fit of rage destroyed Hi'iaka's grove and turned her beloved Hopoe into stone.
This was known as Hopoe the dancing stone of Puna which would rock gently with the rhythm of the waves.

Prints are personally signed by the artist Nelson Makua.
